Becoming a flight attendant

Picture
Becoming a Flight Attendant can give you everything you've always dreamed of in a job: schedule flexibility, great benefits, adventure, flexible time off, paid vacation, and you get paid to travel. The rumors are true! It really is the dream job you've always imagined! It's no wonder this is one of the most competitive careers in the world.

With the industry-changing events of 9/11 and those trailing, airlines and the FAA are challenged with how to fulfill the continually growing and changing needs of the position and have turned to Flight Attendants as a "last line of defense." Airlines are looking for people with quick reactions and who can take on various roles during the course of a flight.

While customer service, poise, safety, and time management skills are still highly prized, one now needs to have additional skills in critical thinking, conflict management, and situation awareness, as well as manage threat-and-error events. And... the airlines want you to already know how to do these things before they hire you. Other needed skills, such as foreign language, are also highly valued.

All airline carriers are becoming highly selective, hiring only their top applicants; those with experience and/or education. They want applicants who know what they are getting into and can show a proven ability to manage the continually changing roles and workload required of the flight attendant position. To get this previous experience many people elect to further their aviation education & enroll in certification courses.

Although this may sound a bit daunting it is actually good news! The higher the standard for the flight attendant position, the stronger the applicants who are attracted to it, and the higher the caliber of employees an airline employs.

While this is obviously good for the airline, it helps you, the applicant, into a stronger, more solid career with higher pay as well! So all of that competition is good.
